Tsigue Jigso owns a 9 hectare farm in the Yirgacheffe region/Kochere district. She operates the farm with the help of her 8 children and her extended family.  We met her through a mutual friend when she was struggling to get her coffee plants healthy and productive. We helped her adjust her methods, tend to enriching the soils, create run-off solutions, and now, after five years, we "splurged' and purchased a small quantity of her beans, while 100% of what she now produces is pre-sold to major high end importers around the world!

Farmers such as Tsigue are spearheading the way for quality focused Ethiopian farmers to produce and sell their coffees directly to international markets. Two years ago Tsigue was voted the most successful farmer in her locality and was awarded a special permit to export her coffee direct. Learning to export coffee has proven quite challenging. The service infrastructure to support farmers like Tsigue is slowly emerging but it still presents farmers with many challenges.

About this Coffee

This single farm lot comes from producer Tsigue Jigso Oda, a female producer in the Kochere District of the Gedeo Zone. Freshly picked red cherries were slowly sundried on raised beds for two weeks. To avoid the intense heat from the sun, the coffee was covered during parts of the day. The coffee was hulled in Chelelektu and dry milled for export in Addis Ababa.
