Introducing a new addition to the Share Collective family of exceptional healthy beverages: Cascara (meaning husk) is the fruit portion of the coffee cherry. It is typically discarded or used as fertilizer around the coffee trees. However, in antiquity long before roasting the green “seed” (bean) inside the coffee cherry, ancients would dry the fruity husk and brew it along with cinnamon and ginger. Yes, it is the ORIGINAL specialty coffee drink!
What does it taste like? It cups with a naturally sweet flavors of raisin, nutty, apple, honey. Here’s the punchline: Health benefits are incredible, having high concentrations of polyphenols, making it a true SUPERFOOD! That’s not all… It is found to be higher in antioxidants than tea, Vitamin C & E, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and pomegranates.
Ok.. this is great, but one more property sets it apart from most all other foods: Extensive research has been conducted and discovered that cascara produces BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor) — a protein essential for maintaining healthy cognition and other brain-related processes, such as sleep and mode stability.
So what can we do with it? — In it’s loose leaf form, it makes an incredible tea, either by itself or with cinnamon and ginger or even cloves or nutmeg. Add a “spot” of cream makes it even more yummy.
